Later in the year, the US Mint plans to release collectible versions of the coin struck in the original composition of 95% copper. Children in attendance received free pennies and adults could exchange currency for new pennies. About 1,500 people were in attendance to watch the ceremony performed by US Mint Deputy Director Andrew Brunhart and Kentucky Governor Steven Beshear. The new design was officially launched at a ceremony in Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 2009. The obverse of the coin continues to feature the original portrait of Lincoln from Victor D. An inscription on the coin indicates his birth year “1809.” Additional inscriptions include “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “One Cent.” The first reverse was designed by Richards Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. ![]() Abraham Lincoln grew up on the family’s 30 acres of Knob Creek Farm near Hodgenville, Kentucky. The first design portrays a log cabin to represent Lincoln’s humble upbringing. During 2009, there are a total of four different reverse deigns planned, each of which will represent a different stage of President Lincoln’s life. ![]() This also marked the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The first newly designed 2009 Lincoln Cent was released on February 12, 2009.
